Publishing is a decision, and it is per assessment

Some schools show every mark immediately, some show nothing until the head of department has moderated, some only at report time. That is a setting, and it can differ per assessment.

The rules it enforces

A gradebook that lets anything be entered is a gradebook nobody trusts by March.

Scores cannot exceed the maximum

Entry is bounded by the assessment’s maximum marks, which removes the commonest source of a wrong average.

Grades derive from the scheme

A grade is calculated, not typed. Overriding one requires a reason that is stored with it.

Weights must total 100

Category weights per subject per term either sum to 100 or are normalised, according to your configuration.

Locked assessments stay locked

Once locked, changing a mark needs an unlock permission and leaves an audit entry.

Absent is not zero

Absent and exempt are distinct from a score of zero and are excluded from averages by policy.

Moderation is recorded

An adjustment made during moderation is stored as an adjustment, with who made it, not as the original mark.

Questions about gradebook and assessment

Can different subjects use different grading schemes?

Yes, and different assessments within a subject can too. A school running a national stream and a Cambridge stream can mark one in percentages with bands and the other in A*–E, in the same tenant and the same term.

Do teachers have to create every assessment from scratch?

No. An assessment is created in one click from the teacher’s own class list, inheriting the subject, group, term and default scheme. Institution templates can also predefine the categories and weights so teachers only add the work itself.

How do homework marks reach the gradebook?

Homework set in the lesson-planning module can be linked to an assessment category, so marking a submission writes the score into the gradebook directly rather than being copied across afterwards.

Can parents see marks as soon as they are entered?

That is your choice, set per assessment. The options are publish immediately, publish after a head of department has moderated the distribution, or hold everything until report time.
